Healthy Tips for Thanksgiving

What is Thanksgiving if it’s not about the 3 F’s. Food, Family and Friends…am I right? In the world of health and wellness I often get the side eye when I try to make “healthy” suggestions and I get it, what’s a holiday is you can’t let go a little..

Truth is, maybe it’s just me, but I quite like not passing out after my meal 🤷🏻‍♀️ and I know my clients feel like they’ve accomplished something substantial when they don’t undo all the hard work they’ve strived so hard for in one weekend. That can take a toll on your mind and body.

Thanksgiving is about so much more than eating, it’s the tradition of making food, decorating the house, bonding with those who you hold close to your heart.

Here are some of my tips to make the day a bit lighter in the belly and fuller in your hearts.

  • Don’t skip meals that day: Eating a regular breakfast and lunch will keep your apetite at bay when you’re cooking or better yet when you show up as a guest, it’s never becoming of you when you walk into the house and begin stuffing your face 😉
  • Make movement a part of the tradition: Go for a hike, create a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt, play a game of football (or is that only an American thing?)
  • Try using fat-free broth to baste the turkey or opt for a vegan or vegetarian option.
  • Use sugar substitutes in place of sugar or fruit purees instead of oil in baked goods. Try opting for fresh whole fruits. You can also try plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream in creamy dips.
  • Homemade dressings instead of store bought for salads.
  • Fill your plate with small portions of everything and aim for one serving. This will leave ample room for dessert and maybe a walk after.
  • SAVOUR your food, stop and enjoy the textures and favours. Take a moment to let the cook know how much you enjoy the food.
  • Focus on the company you keep rather than the food you eat. Take breaks in between bites, strike up a conversation, laugh and love. That’s what it’s all about.
